Trustees of Athens College in Greece Receives $4.5 Million Endowment Gift from Estate of Michael C. Soteriades ‘41
September 5, 2024The United States Board of Trustees hosted an event in New York on May 16, 2025, for alumni, friends, and supporters of Athens College to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the School and the successful completion of the quiet phase of the Centennial Endowment Campaign, which had secured $20 Million in new gifts as of that date. Prime Minister of the Hellenic Republic Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Dean of Columbia Business School Costis Maglaras, both alumni, discussed the future of education in Greece with an emphasis of the impact of AI and technology. Other speakers were Alexis Phylactopoulos, Chair of the Board of Directors, who spoke about the history and values of Athens College, Spiros Pollalis, President, spoke about the academic profile of the School, and George Antoniadis, Chair of the Board of Trustees, explained that the focus of the Campaign was to raise endowed funds to provide permanent support for academic excellence at Athens College.
The $20 Million in new endowed fund gifts has more than doubled the existing endowment, which was first established in New York in 1928 and stood at $18 Million when the fundraising effort began last July. The income from these new funds will enable Athens College to invest in much needed technology, software, hardware, facilities, and equipment, including cutting edge scientific equipment for STEM labs, and will also be used to educate and enrich faculty by funding training designed to improve knowledge and skills, and provide them with the best current teaching methodologies. Some of the new gifts have been designated for scholarship, of these, one will be used to support Athens College alumni with financial need who seek to study in the US.
